Cairo Airport terminals: which one, and how to skip the chaos

Cairo International is the busiest airport in Egypt, and the first thing to know is that it is not one building — it is three terminals, spread far enough apart that you really do not want to be at the wrong one.

The three terminals

Terminal 1 is the oldest and handles EgyptAir domestic flights plus a mix of regional carriers. Terminal 2 took over much of the international EgyptAir and Star Alliance traffic after its refurbishment. Terminal 3 is the modern one, used by EgyptAir's main international routes and partner airlines. There is a shuttle and a people-mover between 2 and 3, but hauling luggage between terminals after a long flight is a hassle worth skipping.

Which one is mine?

Your airline and route decide it, and it can change. The simplest approach is to give your flight number when you book a transfer — the driver then knows your terminal and is already there when you land, even if the airline switches it at the last minute.

The traffic factor

Cairo traffic is its own adventure. The airport sits to the north-east, so Heliopolis and Nasr City are quick at 15 to 25 minutes, while downtown, Zamalek and especially Giza can be 45 minutes to well over an hour depending on the time of day. Late evening is the worst of it. A driver who knows the back routes makes a real difference.

Skipping the crowd

However you arrive, the arrivals area is busy and the taxi touts are persistent. A meet-and-greet transfer means someone is waiting past customs with your name, the fare is already agreed, and you are in the car while everyone else is still bartering. For a first visit to a city this size, that is worth a lot.
