Private transfer, shared shuttle or taxi in Egypt: what is actually worth it

Getting from an Egyptian airport to your hotel comes down to three choices: a private transfer, a shared shuttle, or a taxi. None of them is wrong — it depends on your budget, your patience, and how far you are going. Here is the honest version.

Shared shuttle or resort coach

The cheapest option, and the one most package holidays default to. The catch is time. The coach usually waits until it is full, then drops at a string of hotels — yours might be first or it might be last. On a short hop it is fine; after a delayed flight with kids, that extra hour stings.

Airport taxi

Quick to grab and flexible, but you are negotiating the fare yourself, often with no meter. Prices rise at night and for resorts further out, and the car you get is pot luck. If you are confident haggling and travelling light, it can work out.

Private transfer

You book ahead, the price is fixed, and a driver meets you with your name on a sign. No queue, no negotiating, no extra stops — just your group in the car and straight to the door. It costs more than the shuttle and usually a little more than a taxi, but you are paying for certainty: the car is the right size, the driver tracks your flight, and there are no surprises at 1am.

So which is worth it?

On a tight budget, staying close to the airport and not in a hurry, the shuttle does the job. If you want the trip simply handled — especially with family, lots of luggage, a late arrival, or a long drive to somewhere like Marsa Alam — a private transfer is the one most people are glad they booked.
